Origin’s patent pending WiPass™ tolling system is an open-road tolling architecture that relies on high-accuracy GPS positioning and wireless communication to toll vehicles based on location and distance traveled.
WiPass™ relies on vehicle toll-tags that wirelessly communicate at up to 700 meters with roadside equipment for toll processing. WiPass™ toll-tags contain high accuracy GPS receivers capable of calculating in real-time which lane the vehicle is traveling in.
The Origin system can be installed along existing high-occupancy-vehicle (HOV) lanes, allowing tolling authorities to monetize excess HOV lane capacity by enabling single-occupancy vehicles (SOVs) equipped with Origin’s toll-tags to use HOV lanes for a variable per-mile or per-segment fee. Installation of WiPass™ over existing HOV-lane networks requires minimal change to the physical roadway thereby minimizing the cost of deployment and allowing for system installation in dense urban environments.
WiPass™ provides dramatic cost advantages over RFID-based tolling systems because the need for overhead gantries, variable message signs and roadway partitions are eliminated. As a result, WiPass™ has significantly reduced upfront and operational costs yielding increased revenue for the tolling authority.
In addition to lane-level tolling applications, WiPass™ is ideally suited to other open road tolling applications including:
- Road Pricing
- Vehicle Miles Traveled
- Cordon Pricing
